Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer

Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer is Professor in the German Department at the University of Tübingen, Germany. In 2010 she held the guest professorship in memory of Astrid Lindgren at the Linnaeus University, Kalmar/Växjö, Sweden, and in 2011 she was guest professor for children’s literature at the University of Vienna. She was also one of the advisory editors of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Children’s Literature (2006). She is author of a two-volume encyclopedia of international children’s classics (Metzler, 1999) and a study on canon formation in children’s literature (Metzler, 2003), editor of  Emergent Literacy. Children’s Books from 0 to 3 (Benjamins, 2011), and co-editor (with Teresa Colomer and Cecilia Silva-Díaz) of New Directions in Picturebook Research (Routledge, 2010), (with Thomas Koebner) Filmgenres: Kinder- und Jugendfilm (Reclam, 2010) and (with Astrid Surmatz) Beyond Pippi Longstocking. Intermedial and International Aspects of Astrid Lindgren’s Works (Routledge, 2011). She is chair of the research project “Children’s Literature and European Avant-Garde”, funded by the European Science Foundation. Her research interests are picturebook research, Avant-Garde children’s literature, interfaces between children’s and adult literature, and the relationship between literacy studies, cognitive science and children’s literature.
